A momentous event celebrating the 64th anniversary of Somaliland’s independence from the United Kingdom was held this evening at the Presidential Palace. Attendees included President Muse Bihi Abdi, Vice President Abdirahman Abdilahi Ismail (Sailici), former President Dahir Rayale Kahin, Senate leaders, the Chief Justice, the Attorney General, parliamentarians, cabinet members, party leaders, military commanders, diplomats, politicians, youth leaders, academics, and other distinguished guests. The forum featured speeches underscoring the day’s significance for the Somaliland community.
The event commenced with a play and literary presentations highlighting the value of June 26, the day Somaliland gained independence from British rule. Numerous singers also performed songs celebrating Somaliland and its achievements over the past few decades, setting a festive tone that honored the nation’s rich cultural heritage and its progress since gaining independence.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Abdirisaaq Muse Farah, reflected on the history of Independence Day and the efforts that led to its realization. Veteran pilot Ahmed Mohamed Hassan (Ahmed-dheere) congratulated the people and emphasized the importance of safeguarding their freedom.
UCID party chairman, Eng. Faisal Ali Warabe, praised the Somaliland people and called for unity among citizens and politicians. He urged the House of Representatives to prioritize national interests, effectively serve constituents, work efficiently, pass the budget, enforce the law, and ensure the nation’s growth. Similarly, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yasin Haji Mohamud Hiir (Farotoon), congratulated the community and encouraged cooperation in national development.
Former President Dahir Rayale Kaahin addressed various topics and urged Mogadishu authorities to respect Somaliland’s sovereignty in managing its own development. He emphasized that decisions made by Somaliland are final and irreversible, stressing the importance of not revisiting settled matters unnecessarily.
President Muse Bihi Abdi congratulated the people on the 64th anniversary of Independence Day. He discussed the impending Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Somaliland and Ethiopia, affirming that it would soon be signed and legally binding, highlighting its permanent nature.
The President also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to conducting fair elections in accordance with the law. He assured that the elections would proceed as scheduled, with significant resources allocated despite objections from some opposition parties. President Bihi Abdi underscored the legal mandate for this electoral process, emphasizing its non-negotiable implementation.
