Somaliland’s Claim to Sovereignty Bolstered by Former Somali Foreign Minister

Somaliland has long maintained that it is a sovereign state and not a part of Somalia. This claim has been bolstered by the recent statement of former Somalia Foreign Minister Ahmed Isse Awad, who said that Somalia’s claim to Somaliland is “baseless.”

In his remarks, Awad said, “Somalia has been without a strong, stable central administration since the collapse of the Somali government in 1991. In contrast, Somaliland declared independence in 1991 and has since built a stable, democratic society with a strong central government that is free from Mogadishu’s influence.”

Awad’s statement is significant because it comes from a former Somali official who has firsthand knowledge of the situation in both Somaliland and Somalia. He is also a respected figure in the Somali community, and his words carry weight.

Awad’s statement is based on the fact that Somaliland has been self-governing since 1991. During that time, it has built a stable, democratic society with a strong central government. In contrast, Somalia has been plagued by instability and conflict since the collapse of its central government in 1991.

Somaliland has repeatedly called on Somalia to abandon its false claims to the region and focus on building peace and stability in Mogadishu. Somaliland has achieved peace and prosperity, while Somalia remains mired in conflict.
